In a remarkable medical outcome, a Florida doctor who followed her hunch has eliminated all signs of advanced skin cancer from a patient who had no other treatment options.
The 97-year-old woman was covered with squamous cell tumors on her right leg.
“She was not a candidate for surgery because of the sheer number and size of her tumors. She wasn’t a candidate for radiotherapy, again for the same reasons,” said Dr. Anna Nichols, an assistant professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, whose report on this case was published online in JAMA Dermatology.
Nichols knew there was a link between the human papilloma virus (HPV) and some types of skin cancer, so she directly injected it into the tumors.
It killed them all.
This is the first known report of a complete regression of a cutaneous malignant tumor after direct injections of the 9-valent HPV vaccine.
