India Decriminalises Homosexuality

This historic ruling is of huge significance for gay rights, and reminds us that although there are many challenges and injustices that still exist, progress and development is possible. After 160 years of legislation criminalizing homosexuality in India, the country's supreme court unanimously ruled to decriminalize homosexuality.

This ruling will bring freedom to the 104 million Indians who are part of the LGBT community, and it could potentially help fuel the growing global momentum for gay and transgender rights. This article frames the ruling well against the global backdrop of the LGBT movement.

While there is still a long way to go for LGBT freedoms, this marks an important step towards improvement.
