2018 is quickly coming to a close, and as the year ends all the news outlets are publishing the obligatory yearly news round ups—most of which is, inevitably, quite depressing.
After reading so many stories about climate disaster, Trump, and the war in Yemen, I needed a pick me up. That's how I discovered Gretchen Rubin's podcast, "Happier". The author of the award-winning book, The Happiness Project, Rubin's "Happier" is a podcast that delves into concrete strategies that each of us can adopt to have more productive, fulfilling lives.
In this particular episode, Gretchen and her sister discuss new years resolutions—and specifically, strategies to ensure that we achieve our goals and dreams. This episode also invites Chris Guillebeau, an author known for his book The Art Of Nonconformity who also managed to achieve his personal goal of visiting every country in the world before he turned 35.
So how do we ensure that we actually achieve the goals that we make? Step 1: Make lists. Those lists should be of both the goals you want to achieve, and the goals that you wanted to achieve, but didn't quite manage. You can use the list of "didn't dos" to understand your patterns or resistance, in order to ensure that you don't repeat them. It's also a good idea to divide your goals into categories (health and wellness, relationships, etc.) and have top goals for each of the categories.
Having an accountability buddies can also help. They also recommend creating calendar alerts, to make sure that your short-term actions move you towards your longer-term goals.
For more strategies—and for inspiration to taking a more motivated, positive approach to 2019—I highly recommend checking out this podcast.
