Reuter’s Pulitzer Prize-Winning Investigation Details The Casualties Of Duterte’s Drug War

Reading this Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation is a commitment, but it’s well worth the effort. In 10 in-depth articles, the Reuters investigative team exposes the brutal consequences of Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs.

More than 3900 people have been killed in Duterte’s war—all, allegedly in self-defense. However, the Reuters team convincingly proves that in reality, many of these deaths are actually vigilante executions. Another article exposes how children are getting caught in the crossfire—and even at times targeted deliberately. Other articles explain why Philippine police are taking hundreds of already dead bodies to hospitals (spoiler: it allows them to declare victims “dead on arrival” at the hospital, when in fact they were executed. Also, it allows police to avoid crime scene investigations and dodge media inquiry). Another exposes the existence of a secret death squad, responsible for 108 kills.

Equally as impressive as the reporting itself is the presentation: Drawing on interactive graphics, videos, and Google satellite maps, the journalists bring the audience directly into their investigation. By inserting security footage into their reporting, and helping readers connect the dots with explanatory reporting and graphics, they build a damning case against the perpetrators of violence.

A fearless, and impressive feat of investigative journalism—and definitely worthy of the Pulitzer Prize the team won.
