Erin Siegal McIntyre is a independent investigative journalist. She is a Senior Fellow at the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University and the author of "Finding Fernanda."
ProPublica is working with unnamed partners in the U.S. and in Latin America to "fill in gaps in what we know" about shelters contracted by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) to house, educate, and care for migrant children who crossed the border on their own or who have been forcibly separated from their families by the U.S. government. Both groups are known as unaccompanied children, despite the fact that those who have been taken away from their parents were not unaccompanied upon their arrival to the United States.
The map, which draws on data obtained via FOIA request, is interactive so users can click around their area or state to see if any migrant kids are being housed nearby.
Other sources ProPublica's team drew from include the HHS Tracking Accountability in Government Grants System (TAGGS), Arizona Department of Health Services, California Department of Social Services, New York Civil Liberties Union, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS), Federal Register, Virginia Department of Social Services, Washington State Department of Social and Health Services.
They ask map visitors the following questions:
Do you know a child in a facility? Do you know something about a facility?
Each leads to a page soliciting information from the public on the topic.
In order to get a complete picture of the detention facilities and the children inside, we need your help. Do you know an unaccompanied minor or a child who was separated at the U.S.-Mexico border? Tell us if you know where they are being held.It also notes:
If you are looking for a child but don’t know their exact location, you can tell us when was the last time you saw them or communicated with them.
