Ever Heard The Echo Of An Ice Cave Inside An Antarctic Glacier?

First of all, let me thank fellow piqer Daria Sukharchuk for calling my attention to this absolutely stunning piece. Amazing stuff, thanks!

As technology develops, journalism is bound explore new possibilities. We're witnessing it in new formats, like Facebook live video, and genres, like data pieces where news merge with coding. However, traditional reporting formats are well refined structures that we shouldn't discard so readily. Doing so involves a risk of banality and readership alienation.

Wouldn't it be great if we could just merge the new and the old?

Search no further. Here you have a perfectly classic chronicle, full of flavour, feeling and relevant information, with quotes and all the traditional whatnot... with a twist: The best of 360 video, web design, short video clips, text nuggets and infographics (I loved to see their progress on the mini-map!).

The piece follows the journey of a scientific vessel, from Hobart (Tasmania) to the Chilean Patagonia. And, just like the journalists mix the old and the new, this Antarctic voyage reminisces about classic exploration, but the use of pioneer techniques allows the researchers to reach further than anyone before. Ever heard the echo of an ice cave inside an Antarctic glacier, or watched a baby albatross chick looking at you with curiosity?

The scientists start by researching the role of climate change in the break-up of a glacier. From there, they stop at several locations, surveying wildlife and charting frozen islands. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and the reporters make you feel like you're one more aboard.

From the moment I took a look at the piece, I thought it deserved to be here at PIQD. Its design was striking and new, and the magnitude of the story justified it. Only when I went through to the end I realised how absolutely excellent this piece was. And there's penguins too.

It brought to mind another piece I recommended a few months back. I'd suggest you go check it out if you liked this one!
