Recently, Chile became the first nation in the Americas to ban plastic bags. Now scientists and researchers from this country have created a substitute which dissolves in water without contaminating it. The bags don't contain the harmful petroleum derivatives of ordinary plastic, but derivatives of a non-polluting limestone which allow this product to dilute without harming the environment.
Roberto Astete and Cristian Olivares – the brains behind the creation of these biodegradable bags – hope to start marketing their product in October.
But... what about rain? Well, the scientists pointed out that the bag can be produced in such a way as to be impervious to water of a certain temperature, meaning that external precipitation will not impede its use.
Now the only question is whether other countries will follow Chile's steps.
