Investigation: Is Unilever Really The Sustainable Business It Says It Is?

Ever since CEO Paul Polman took the reins at Unilever, sustainability has been at the core of the Dutch-British transnational company’s corporate strategy. As a Dutch national, I have long been interested in their mission to be at the forefront of greener business. So I was glad to come across this investigative story by Investico, an independent, non-profit platform for investigative journalism in the Netherlands.

According to Unilever, the company is on the right track. They believe that sustainability is not only perfectly compatible with commercial success, but that they can also halve their environmental impact while "growing the business" at the same time.

This thorough investigation shows that that claim doesn’t hold up: it concludes that the business is growing – but not in a very green way. It brings home one of the key problems in the wider sustainability debate: “People want to consume responsibly, but not less.”

It's so important to have independent journalists investigating the realities behind corporate claims! Glad to know about Investico too.
