Something rarely seen. A company still seen more as redefining the market (even though it recently did IPO) rather than following its trends is doing something dramatic to stay alive.
Snapchat was pushed to this dramatic decision by Facebook, which copied without any embarrassment most of Snap's features. But still, the changes outlined coming to the app will make it a total new approach.
Personally I loved Snapchat for offering really out-of-a-box thinking that was later transferred into the interface. They made vertical video cool, invented the "story" format and broke all the UX rules. This was enough to push them to mainstream, but not enough to keep them there. Not with such aggressive competition.
I also really liked Spectacles (the glasses), which I find very powerful to use for storytelling, just not connected to the right platform. I am still surprised that Instagram, after copying almost everything, didn't release their own so far.
What will come out of it? We have to wait and see. But such a pivot is rarely seen among tech companies.
