Active Social Media Users On Our Planet Are Now More Than 3 Billion

Unstoppable rise. This is about the appetite for social media worldwide.

The latest data shows that the number of people using social media has just passed the historic three billion mark. As of the early days of August, the exact figure was 3.028bn, compared to the total of 7.524bn living on our planet.

The rise is not slowing. The number of active social media users has grown at a rate of one million new users per day over the past quarter.

There are interesting details, exposed by the Global Digital Statshot from We Are Social and Hootsuite:

  • Facebook marks a significant portion of social media growth over the past four months, with the platform surging past the two billion MAU (monthly active user) mark to reach 2.046bn monthly active users.
  • YouTube, whose recent updates to global user figures put the platform in second place in the global MAU rankings, with 1.5bn active users.
  • The latest data from Ericsson show that our love affair with mobile connectivity continues to strengthen too, with the average smartphone user now consuming more than 2.3GB of mobile data every month via their mobile devices.
  • Mobile phones are now the most important device for two-thirds of the world’s population.
  • The potential for connectivity continues its relentless advance too, with smartphones accounting for four out of every five phones sold in the first quarter of 2017.

Here, Simon Kemp explains with the help of striking graphics where we techno-immortals are heading.
