When it comes to the future of cannabis, one thing remains certain: the need for more research on the health effects of the plant is needed. Recently, American researchers analysed 10,000 studies conducted since 1999 in an attempt to know more about the effects of cannabis on health. The results showed both benefits and detriments. More specifically, the 400-page report found cannabis to be particularly useful for treating PTSD, epilepsy and pain management. Findings also suggest a link between cannabis use and lower birth rates, higher risk for car crashes, and more frequent respiratory illnesses.
Perhaps the most significant finding from this international review is that there is a severe lack of research on cannabis use in its various forms. As legalisation efforts move forward across the US and globally, so does our need for understanding. Twenty-eight states have legalised marijuana in some form, but due to lack of evidence, controversy over its usefulness remains. Research is not keeping up with policy. Because of this, there are no standards that can be set, creating an issue for the medical community.
