Daria Sukharchuk is a journalist based in Berlin, where she works as a news anchor for Russian-language OstWest.tv. Cincinnati.com journalists spent a week documenting the opioid addiction across several counties. Within one week, 18 people died, 180 overdosed, and 15 babies were born with heroin-related medical problems. This 20-page special collection of stories around heroin is a great example of local journalism and a very close (and humanizing) look on the opioid epidemic that has gripped the US Midwest, following it in courtrooms, jails, hospitals, and 911 call centers. Showing that it transcends age, class, and race, all in an attempt to save the life not yet taken by heroin.
