Israel has solidified its place at the forefront of the cannabis industry. As global attitudes are shifting on the topic, the country has remained a leader in cannabis research, and has previously taken unofficial measures to decriminalize it. This week, Israel officially decriminalized the recreational and medicinal use of marijuana.
Decriminalization imposes monetary fees, rather than criminal penalties, for the use of the plant in public. The decision, said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, opens the country to further understanding of the pros and cons of cannabis use. “On the one hand, we are opening ourselves up to the future,” he said. “On the other hand, we understand the dangers and will try to balance the two.”
In addition to the advancement of research and policy, decriminalization also opens Israel to the potential for industry, innovation and profit.
