Danielle Batist is an experienced freelance journalist, founder of Journopreneur and co-founder of the Constructive Journalism Project. She lived and worked all around the globe and covered global and local stories of poverty, exclusion and injustice. Increasingly, she moved beyond ‘problem-reporting’ to include stories about the solutions she found. She witnessed the birth of the new nation of South Sudan and interviewed the Dalai Lama. She reported for Al Jazeera, BBC and the Guardian and regularly advises independent media organisations on innovation and sustainability. She loves bringing stories to the world and finding the appropriate platforms to do so. The transformation of traditional media fascinates rather than scares her. While both the medium and the message are changing, she believes the need for good storytelling remains.
This audiovisual experiment by The New York Times struck me as an original way of storytelling. It started off as a call-out on social media, where the paper asked readers to share their stories. More than 1,300 mums did, and from their stories, the multimedia team created Conception: a video series told through the voices of six women.
Each 4 minute audio piece is recorded by one of the women and enriched by beautiful illustrations. What struck me was the rawness of the stories: they feel unedited, as if they come straight from the women’s heart. The topics they talk about are tough ones, and often touch upon taboos, including postnatal depression. Listening to their voices, you can only admire the bravery of the women who decided to speak up, maybe even for the very first time.
These stories are most impactful when told just how they are, without any context or commentary. By experimenting with this format New York Times managed to achieve just that.
