Just 53 days left for the ‘regime change’ referendum in Turkey. The country will decide whether to go on with the current parliamentary system or a new presidential system. The proposed system is unlike any other in the world, gathering the power into one person’s hand. In this case Erdoğan is that person and he is heavy-handed, that's no secret.
In last 16 years that he has been in power, Turkey’s instability has grown more and more. Since 2015, more than a thousand people were killed in more than 40 terrorist attacks mostly carried out by ISIS. Turkey’s foreign policy caused this catastrophe, the opposition claims.
But Erdoğan promises for "a strong Turkey" in his ‘yes’ campaign, which is largely advocated by media that has been locked under strong censorship for many years.
Still, the polls show Turkey is divided on the matter, with nearly 45% for 'yes', 45% for 'no' and 10% remaining 'undecided'. Erdoğan just called those who vote 'no' for the change, "terrorists."
The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) has seen two co-chairs imprisoned with 10 other deputies for their alleged links with the terrorist organisation PKK. The HDP got 10.8 percent of votes in the 2015 elections, winning 59 deputies out of 550 deputies in parliament. This may give an idea the fairness of the referendum.
The following 53 days will be tough for Turkey, that is obvious.
