Syrians are suffering.
On a daily basis, they become victims of the regime's barrel bombs, Russian cruise missiles or US airstrikes.
Syrian children, particularly, have experienced more trauma — both physical and emotional — than one can imagine.
It might feel insufficient to say that children from Syria are suffering from 'PTSD'.
For that reason, a doctor created a new term to describe the children's pain:
Human devastation syndrome.
“We have talked to so many children, and their devastation is above and beyond what even soldiers are able to see in the war,” says Dr M.K. Hamza, who created the term.
Hamza is a neuropsychologist with the Syrian–American Medical Society. He chairs the organization's mental health committee. 1,000 Syrian-American members have already volunteered to provide medical aid to Syria's war victims.
"You have children who are devastated and this is not the end of it", says Hamza.
