Coaliția pentru Familie (CpF — Coalition for Family) is an organisation in Romania that is fighting to restore the “traditional family”. More precisely, a referendum is gonna take place in the months to come, where people have to vote yes or no about the constitutional change of the definition of marriage as being that between a man and a woman, as opposed to how it is now — between spouses. To top it up, CpF is also against monoparental families, domestic partnerships, abortion, contraceptive methods and sexual education.
The article explains very well how these ultra-conservatory and religious views are not uniquely held by some Romanians, but also by some of our neighbours like Hungary and Poland, making them all the more dangerous. We also get a much necessary glimpse into what happened back in Ceaușescu’s time, when all these interdictions were in place — thousands of women died from illegal abortions, the orphanages were filled with unwanted children, couples stayed together no matter what, which is one factor that lead to Romania having one of the highest rate of domestic violence.
The coolest thing about this article is that it presents all this information in comics form. It’s easy to follow, it takes some of the heavyness of the content away, and it’s a great alternative to the traditional longform.
