Reportedly, the grand mufti of Syria – or to be precise, Ahmed Badreddin Hassoun, the palace mufti of the Assad regime – approved the execution of thousands of inmates in the infamous Saydnaya prison over the last five years.
A few days ago, Amnesty International revealed that at least 13,000 people have been brutally murdered in the prison's dark cells.
Hassoun is Syria's highest Islamic authority. He is known as one of the closest supporters of Bashar al Assad's regime. In fact, the mufti (a Sunni Muslim) is one of the main pillars of the regime. Without Hassoun's role beside Assad, the regime's sectarian basis would be too obvious.
Hassoun's involvement in the mass executions was necessary for the regime. In fact, his approvals gave them a "legal justification".
Last year, Hassoun toured Europe. Since it's now known that he is jointly responsible for mass murder, we just can hope that he will be jailed next time.
